Game Description
Players take control of a golden lion tamarind in a fight for survival against a rapidly disappearing habitat.
Design & Development
Habitat Hopper was developed for the February '19 issue of SuperScience Magazine to accompany an article about deforestation in Brazil, resulting in the habitat loss of the golden lion tamarind.
The game was designed to have a moderate degree of difficulty so as to more accurately represent the seriousness of the environmental issue it highlights.
The player is given the advantage of speed and maneuverability as they are able to plant a path to access new areas more quickly. The AI opponent is slow, but methodical, and has endless "resources" as it multiplies the number of lumberjacks in play.
There is no win state. The player must stay alive as long as possible, but will eventually succumb to the superior numbers of the AI opponent. This draws a parallel to the race against time in environmental conservation.
